BEREAVED FAMILIES - 216 MONTREAL ROAD, CORNWALL, ONTARIO
OPEN ADULT MONTHLY SUPPORT EVENINGS
Second Thursday of each month from
7:00 to 9:00 PM. Also know as SUPPORT AND SHARE NIGHT
these monthly support evenings are open to all bereaved families.
The evening includes a guest speaker and the opportunity to share
with other bereaved individuals in small groups who have had a similar
lost. The small groups are facilitated by trained bereaved volunteers
who have participated in a recognized grief facilitating course
through BFO - Quality Assurance Program.
OPEN ADULT AFTERNOON SUPPORT
Last Tuesday of each month from 1:00 to 3:00
PM. These afternoon support groups are
for bereaved adults and families who are struggling with the loss
of a loved one. Afternoon support group includes a monthly topic on
coping with loss and provides an opportunity to share with other bereaved.
OPEN YOUTH DROP-IN SUPPORT
First Monday of each month from 3:00 to 4:30
PM. In addition to the support group program, the BFO Bereavement
Centre also offers drop in sessions for youth who have lost a significant
person (parent/caregiver, family member, friend). These drop-in sessions
provide bereavement information/resources, refreshments/snacks and
an opportunity to meet with other youth.
CLOSED CHILDREN SUPPORT GROUPS
Held on Tuesday from 4:00 to 5:00 PM. These
groups consist of six consecutive weekly sessions led by a social
worker and trained facilitators. The groups are designed as a peer
support and offer activities to help children identify their feelings
and learn from others' experience in coping with the death of a family
member. Groups are offered for children ages 4 to 8 and 9 to 12. Registrations
for these groups are taken on an ongoing basis and groups are offered
year round.
CLOSED ADULT SUPPORT GROUPS
Held Spring and Fall. Evening or afternoon
groups are available, depending on participant's preferences, and
consist of six consecutive weekly sessions. Each group is facilitated
by trained facilitators who themselves are bereaved and have experienced
a similar loss. Groups are available for the following losses: Loss
of a Child, Perinatal Loss, Loss of a Parent/Sibling, Loss of a Spouse/Partner,
and Loss of a Loved one to Suicide. Early registration is advised
due the limited size of each group.
TEEN WORKSHOPS
Held Spring and Fall or as needed and consist
of a one day workshop led by professionals/bereaved youth facilitators.
These workshops are designed to support young people ages 12 to 19
who have experience the death of someone special. Workshops are designed
to help teens explore the difficult aspect of change after a loved
one dies. Registrations are accepted on an ongoing basis.
OUTREACH SUPPORT -
New Program available to surrounding communities
and consisting of three consecutive weekly sessions. This new program
has been implemented and designed to reach out to bereaved families
who are unable to access the Centre.
SERVICES
TELEPHONE HELP LINE
Calls are taken daily from 9:00 AM. - 4:00 PM.
It's an opportunity for the bereaved person to receive immediate support,
share their concerns and obtain information on healthy grieving. After
hours messages are retrieved and returned daily.
BEREAVEMENT PACKAGES
Individually prepared resource packages are available
for the bereaved. Agencies/caregivers working with the bereaved can
also request bereavement packages by calling the centre. Packages
may be requested by phone, fax and in person.
ONE ON ONE DISCUSSION
Provides a bridge for the newly bereaved person
who may not be ready to participate in support groups. It's an opportunity
for the newly bereaved to receive support and comfort, with a bereaved
facilitator that can share their experience, offer support and coping
suggestions.
TELEPHONE SUPPORT
Quarterly telephone support calls are provided
to all bereaved currently receiving support from Bereaved Families.
The social worker will contact the bereaved, as per their request,
to discuss concerns and offer supportive insight and information regarding
upcoming groups or workshops.
LENDING LIBRARY
Open from 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM and has an extensive
collection of books, pamphlets, articles and videos on a variety of
subjects on grief issues. The library sections included: General,
Spousal, Sibling and Parent Loss, Loss of a Child, Loss of a Loved
One to Suicide, a large section on Children/Teen Grief and many French
books which are hard to find.
NEWSLETTER
Quarterly publication
which is distributed to bereaved families who contact or are referred
to Bereaved Families for support and community service agencies working
with the bereaved. The circular contains supportive articles, highlights
of upcoming programs/services, workshops/groups and other relative
information on grief and healing.

has available valuable bereavement information and articles for
families. The web site provides detailed information on our programs
and services as well as related bereavement links. A bereaved facilitator
will be pleased to correspond with anyone wishing to use this means

PUBLIC BUREAU/TRAINING
BFO provides professional speakers for your community,
workplace or service group on topics relating to grief and bereavement.
Bereavement Facilitator Training is offered every two years (mandatory
for all volunteers at BFO leading our groups) and for interested community
professionals at a minimal cost.
BEREAVEMENT CENTRE
Open from 9:00 AM 4:00 PM Monday through
Friday and no appointment is necessary to visit the Bereavement
Centre for support, resources and information on healthy grieving.
